Skip the hatch.
We did it for you.

A curated catalog of pixel companions for Codex — already generated, already aligned, already a little unhinged. Drop one into ~/.codex/pets/, call /pet, skip the hatch-pet ritual entirely.

Live in the overlay

Your pet talks while Codex works.

Codex's floating overlay shows your pet alongside the active thread state — running, waiting, ready for review. Built-in pets are wholesome about it. HATCH pets aren't.

Hatched. Packaged. Drop-in ready.

Codex looks for pets in ~/.codex/pets/. HATCH pets ship pre-built for that folder — manifest, spritesheet, frame counts, all generated. One curl, then /pet.

01

Pick a pet

Browse the catalog above. Each ships as a 1536×1872 spritesheet with 9 animation states tuned to the timeline — bagholding, aping in, GM, rugged, sending it, DD.

02

Curl the package

One command pulls pet.json + spritesheet.webp into ~/.codex/pets/<id>/ — the same folder Codex's official pets live in. Already hatched. No skill-installer needed.

03

/pet, then Cmd+K

In Codex, run /pet to wake the overlay. If your pet isn't visible yet, hit Cmd+K → Force Reload Skills, or refresh from Settings > Appearance > Pets. Then cope.

The 9 states

Every emotion, mapped to the chart.

Codex pets are status indicators. The overlay reflects whether your agent is running, waiting for input, or ready for review. Built-in pets say things like “the build is warming up.” HATCH pets say what you'd say.

Why

OpenAI gave you hatch-pet. We gave you the pets.

The official Codex pets are wholesome. A loaf of bread. A loose thread. The build is warming up. I am keeping an eye on the sparks. Cute, soft, family-friendly. We needed something else.

HATCH is a curated catalog of pre-built Codex pets with the edges left in. Same 8×9 atlas Codex expects, same ~/.codex/pets/ folder, same /pet command. Just a different soul.

Open format, drop-in install, no hatch-pet ritual required. Submit your own. Fork the catalog. The mascot of your terminal finally has nine emotions worth feeling.
